Various Powder Coating Materials for Custom Made Parts

  • 2022-08-23 13:37:25

Different Powder Coating Materials are used for Custom-Made Parts. For either metal or plastic items, there are three basic groups of powder coatings. Usually, a manufacturer's decision will be based on cost and probable process complexity with powder coating.

There are numerous sub-groups within each of these types of powder coating materials. Each powder also strives to achieve particular finishing attributes. Different Powder Coating Materials consist of:

  1. Thermoplastic Powder Coat Finish Materials
  2. Thermoset Powder Coat Finish Materials
  3. Ultraviolet (UV) Curable Powder Coat Finish Materials

Thermoplastic Powder Coat

These are synthetic materials that can be formed in various ways. When heated to a high temperature, they melt, then when they cool, they solidify. Thermoplastic polymers melt at application temperatures to coat metal parts. After cooling, they exhibit increased chemical and mechanical strengths. These powder coating materials’ endurance and aesthetic benefits make them useful in the prototype manufacturing sector. Some of them are as follows:

  • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Powder Coating

PVC coatings for parts provide a powder coat finish that is durable and sleek. These coatings are flexible and useful for a variety of applications. They can withstand impact, spray, and a variety of solvents. PVC coatings are useful for electrical applications because of their strong dielectric properties.

  • Polyester Powder Coating

These coatings have a fantastic appearance, are abrasion-resistant, and weather well. On exposed auto parts like strut springs, they work perfectly. They come in a huge variety of color palettes. They reduce shrinkage, are durable, and resistant to tearing.

  • Nylon Powder Coating

Powder coatings made of nylon are incredibly resilient and give materials resilience. They ensure that parts can be used for longer periods of time by providing suitable protection against solvents and chemicals. Nylon is useful as a coating material on gears and conveyor parts because it has a low coefficient of friction.

  • Polyolefin Powder Coating

Polyolefin compounds used in powder coat finishes have excellent chemical and abrasion resistance. These materials give the machine parts smoother surfaces and superior adhesive properties. Thus, the medical industry can benefit from these coatings on laboratory components that require regular cleaning.

Thermoset Powder Coat

Similar to how thermoplastic powders are applied, thermoset powder coating materials can also be used. Thermosets, on the other hand, undergo chemical cross-linking processes, which is the difference. When baked, these processes frequently become irreversible.

The physical characteristics of the plastic alter as the cross-linking takes place. These plastics become solid coatings as a result of the modifications. Thermosets frequently cure more strongly than thermoplastics. Additionally, some of them, especially those with thicker layers, become brittle as they harden. Examples are Epoxy, Epoxy-Polyester Hybrid, and Acrylic Powder Coating.

  • Epoxy

Materials with an epoxy coating are typically tough and electrically insulating. However, if you expose them to UV radiation, they may eventually become brittle and dull. As a result, most epoxy-coated components are limited to indoor or underground uses, including pipelines.

  • Epoxy-Polyester Hybrid

By combining polyester and epoxies to produce softer plastics, this hybrid helps to avoid chipping or cracking. Outside, hybrid powder coating outperforms traditional epoxy coating. This is due to their superior weathering abilities and lower chalking.

  • Acrylic Powder Coating

Acrylics leave behind a high gloss finish that can be clear or colored and mix flawlessly over surfaces. They are now helpful as a car coating for specific parts such as exposed engine parts and those requiring high gloss finishes.

UV (Ultraviolet) Curable Powder Coat

The powder coat finish is applied using the traditional powder coating process using either a convection oven or a regular infrared. In this scenario, the temperatures frequently reach 400 ?. Additionally, curing periods might differ from 10 mins to 30 minutes. These issues make powder coating injection-molded plastic components challenging.

But current technologies are producing new powders and resins. These resins cure powder-coated items using ultraviolet (UV) light. At temperatures below 200 degrees Fahrenheit, UV curing can be accomplished in less than two minutes. As a result, materials like plastic parts and others that might not be able to endure higher coating temperatures can now be powder coated. Additionally, painted prototypes provide for a quicker time to market and lower manufacturing costs.
